Embracing a Meaningful Community: The Power of Peace Education

My name is Shotaro Seto and I just recently joined the SOLA community. Studying international relations, I am constantly reminded of the importance of international peace and acceptance.

In today's turbulent world, peace education is more than just a curriculum, it's a supportive environment that fosters empathy, conflict resolution skills, and a commitment to loving others. I love how at SOLA we teach empathy, allowing us to understand and respect diverse perspectives. It also equips us with essential conflict resolution skills, promoting dialogue over violence. I believe that teaching peace skills at a young age is crucial because it’s when our brains are most developing. When we think of such things, we notice new perspectives on social justice and environmental sustainability. What is the other person thinking? How can I meet their needs while also accommodating mine? These are all questions to ask. Ultimately, peace education is about cultivating a culture of peace in our communities. By embracing its principles at SOLA, we can build a brighter, more harmonious future for generations to come.

That’s what made SOLA stand out for me, it reminded me of the unity and joy of collaborating with others and building relationships that extend beyond the program. It’s really been a joy getting to work with the amazing team at SOLA and I’d like to especially thank Ms. Stouffer for the amazing opportunity!
